FAQ

What should I wear?

If you are a beginning student, any loose fitting, comfortable clothing is acceptable.  Long sleeved t-shirts and sweat pants are ideal.  Some students wear knee pads for Ki-Aikido practice, but pads are not required.

Traditional Japanese martial arts are practiced without shoes.  In order to avoid injury, watches, jewelry and other accessories are not allowed.

Most students who decide to pursue martial arts training eventually purchase a training uniform.  The uniform is called a gi (pronounced "ghee"), and consists of a white cotton jacket, pants, and a belt.  Please speak to an instructor for advice on purchasing a quality gi; you can buy one either through our school or on your own.

When are your classes?

  • Please visit our Calendar page for an up-to-date schedule that includes changes due to special classes, holidays, etc.
  • Please try to arrive at least 10 minutes before class starts so that you have time to change and stretch.

Don't I need to be in shape to take martial arts?

Students of any fitness level may join at any time.  Most people begin martial arts training to help get in shape, rather than wait until they are in top physical condition to begin. If you wait until you are in great shape to begin training, chances are you will never start!

New students should listen to their bodies and exercise at their own pace. As you progress and your fitness level improves, you can push yourself harder. Though not required, it's a good idea to consult your physician prior to changing the level and intensity of your physical activity.

Will I be injured in class?
The instructors at Northwest Martial Arts take every precaution to ensure a safe training environment. Students are taught and expected to train safely to minimize self-inflicted injury and to avoid injuring others. However, practicing martial arts is a potentially dangerous activity, and accidents occasionally do happen.

If you are injured, please inform an instructor immediately.

Why do you bow in class?

Bowing is the traditional East Asian method of showing respect, similar to the Western custom of shaking hands.  When class begins, we bow to the front of the class as a show of respect to the dojo.  We then bow to each other as a greeting and invitation to train together with respect and friendship.  The bow we perform in class is not of a religious nature.

How long does it take to earn a black belt?

The time required to earn a black belt depends on many factors; age, level of coordination, physical condition, experience and talent. Above all, your commitment to training will determine how quickly you progress.  The training program at Northwest Martial Arts is demanding and the requirements for promotion are high. In general, the minimum training time for black belt is at least five years, though it can take considerably longer. The important thing to remember is not how long it takes to reach black belt, but what you get from your training along the way.
